7. Malibu Creek State Park

* The above pictures taken separately from the video using a digital camera.

Malibu Creek State Park is in the Santa Monica Mountains, between the Malibu beach and Ventura freeway.  This is where the popular TV series MASH and original movie Planet of the Apes were filmed, and there are still rusty cars used in MASH.

The ride starts from Mulholland, at the parking.  Derek and Jason follow Grasslands single track into the park, then Crags Road to park headquarters, rock climbing site, and swimming hole.  We explore the top of rock climbing site and then go to a small dam.  After a rocky stream bed, there is MASH site with rusty Jeep and hospital vehicle with tourists taking pictures.  On a dirt road to Malibu Lake direction, we turn around at a private property sign.  We go out of the park on a paved road to a Rock store, a popular motorcyclists gathering place with a cafeteria.  Back in the park, we climb on Bulldog FR to the junction with Castro Crest FR.  We try to go to Castro Peak, but turn around at a private property sign.  Heading east on Mesa Peak FR and Backbone trail, we ride on a cool slickrock section.  The view of the Santa Monica Mountains contrasting with the blue sky presents a great panoramic scenery.  Also the remains of the recent fire on the mountain range surprise us with out-of-this-world like scenery.  We continue downhill and take the single track from Tapia FR.  We follow Las Virgenes paved road to Tapia to find a trail that goes to Malibu park, but it is closed, so continue on the paved road back to the park.

The Malibu Creek State Park ride of about 30 miles was recorded for about 140 minutes (some time consuming climbing sections were not recorded).  Because it was such a sunny day some sections have sun light glaring to the camera lens depending on the angle, but it is not a camera malfunction or permanent.
